		APPOINTMENT OF RESEARCH FELLOW
	(Subject to final approval by the funding bodies)

THE JOB: Applications are invited for a researcher  to join ongoing work in the
area of text generation/  discourse representation  within  the ESPRIT  and LRE
programmes of the Commission of the European Communities.  The work will mainly
consist in the specification  of evaluation criteria  for  text quality  for  a
corpus  of bureaucratic texts  (applications for  pension benefits) written  in
English, German and Italian,  and in the   computational specification  of  the
mechanisms governing information structuring,  in particular thematic selection
and   progression   in discourse,  with   special  attention  to  a   corpus of
bureaucratic texts in the three languages.  The successful  candidate will work
in close cooperation with Dr.  Julia Lavid, team leader  of the project for the
Madrid site at the Department of  English Philology (Universidad Complutense de
Madrid).

THE PERSON: The successful candidate will be expected to have a Phd in one of
the following areas: Text generation, Text linguistics with a computational
background, Natural Language Processing, or closely related areas, good team
working skills, an appreciation of the problems of technical authors and
translators, and experience of writing and delivering research papers. A
working knowledge of German and Italian would be a definite advantage.

THE SALARY: The salary will be in the range 22.000 and 25.000 ecus (12 months),
and will be subject to the Spanish taxation laws.

DURATION   OF THE  JOB:  The appointment is for  a   fixed term  of 12  months,
extendable  to 15 months  subject to approval  by the  funding bodies, starting
April/May 1994.
